THE EXPERIENCE

About this experience

Begin your experience by meeting your host at Kome Dreaming, a welcoming café in central Tokyo, near Tokyo Tower and Zojoji Temple. After meeting your host, explore the cultural story behind rice, onigiri, and amazake. Learn why onigiri has become one of Japan’s most popular everyday foods and why it is traditionally shaped into a triangle or oval.

Then, make your own onigiri. With step-by-step guidance, prepare the rice, choose from five fillings, shape your rice ball, and wrap it with nori. Fillings are such as wakana, yukari, and salmon, subject to seasonal availability and dietary requirements.

After making your onigiri, enjoy it with a warm bowl of miso soup. Taste several varieties of amazake, a traditional Japanese drink made from fermented rice. Despite its name, amazake is generally non-alcoholic and naturally sweet, making it a unique and approachable introduction to Japanese fermentation and rice culture.

Depending on the tasting selection, you may discover flavors such as kinako and green juice alongside amazake from a specialist koji producer. Your host will explain the ingredients, traditions, and flavor differences as you taste.

This is more than a cooking lesson. It is a chance to connect with an important part of Japanese everyday life through food, conversation, and hands-on participation. Leave with new cooking skills, a deeper understanding of Japan’s rice culture, and a memorable taste of Tokyo.

A rice-themed souvenir, such as chopsticks or a sake cup, may also be provided to help you remember the experience after your trip.
